How to Write The Perfect Wedding Thank You Notes

·

There is no lovelier token of appreciation than a handwritten thank you card. And while you may be dreading the process, crafting your wedding thank you notes doesn’t have to be a chore. With a little extra effort, you may just enjoy it!

Step 1: Take Notes

The key to writing the perfect wedding thank you notes is preparation. Keeping a detailed log of gifts received will help streamline your process and add a personal touch to your notes. After all, it’s so much easier to thank your Aunt Pam for the flatware set you’ve been coveting than it is to wrack your brain to remember what she sent you weeks later, only to come up short. Also take note of return address of any gifts that are mailed to you and add them to your address book. The amount of time and hassle having those on hand will save you is huge.

Step 2: Gather Supplies

Nothing inspires quite like a fresh stack of personalized stationery and a new pen. And it's always a good idea to test your ink on the paper before you begin. When you have 100+ notes to write the last thing you want to worry about is smudging. We think custom wedding thank you notes from Marrygrams and an ultra fine Sharpie is the perfect way to get you started in the right direction!

Step 3: Set Aside Time

Clear a block of time dedicated only to your wedding thank you notes. Your guests took time and care in selecting your gift and attending your wedding and you should do the same for their cards. You don't have to write them all at once, small batches with minimal distractions or rush is ideal.

Step 4: Practice Makes Perfect

Keep a few sheets of scratch paper handy to jot down your early drafts. Not only will it help you tidy up your handwriting, but it will give you a sense of how your words will fit on the page.

Step 5: Get Down to Business

It happens to every bride and now it’s happened to you. The last slice of cake has been eaten, the honeymoon is over, and you simply can’t put your thank you notes off any longer. But have no fear! Check out our handy examples below and you will be licking the final stamp in no time!

A gift from your registry:

Dear Aunt Pam,

Thank you so much for the custom engraved platter. We were so excited to unwrap such a thoughtful and special gift. It will be a cherished piece on our dinner table for many years to come. We are so happy you were able to share in our special day and hope to see you again very soon!

Love,

A gift not from your registry:

Dear Katheryn,

We can't thank you enough for the lovely set of wine glasses. We've already put them to good use and will think of you fondly whenever we use them. Thank you again for your kindness and for joining us in celebration of our marriage!

With love and appreciation,

A gift from a stranger:

Dear Mr. Jacobson,

Thank you for attending our wedding celebration! The towels were such a thoughtful (and cozy) surprise! It was so lovely meeting you, and we hope you had a wonderful time.

Warmest regards,
(Your names here)

No gift:

Dear Rachael,

I am so happy we got to visit with you at our wedding a few weeks ago, you kept the dance floor on fire! We truly appreciate you making the trip, it's been too long! We hope to see you again very soon.

Much love,
(Your names here)

Money:

Dear John and Miranda,

It was so wonderful having you at our wedding a few weeks ago! We can't thank you enough for your generous gift. We are saving for a down payment on a new home and you helped put us one step closer to realizing that dream. Thank you again!

With love and appreciation,
(Your names here)

Step 6: The Home Stretch

Etiquette states that you have 3 months after receiving a gift to send your wedding thank you notes. So plan ahead! Order custom stationery, keep a detailed log book, and make sure you bring a sample note to the Post Office to weigh before purchasing stamps. Your guests will appreciate your thoughtfulness and you can enjoy your new Kitchen Aid, guilt free!
