Ahhh, the Mini-Moon. Great on it’s own or as a pre-honeymoon appetizer, this wedding trend is all the rage right now and it’s no surprise why. But what is it exactly? And how mini does it have to be? And are you still allowed to take a real honeymoon after? Never fear, Marrygrams Bride! We’ve got those answers and more, plus inspiration for planning your own mini-moon below!
What is a Mini-Moon Anyway?
A mini-moon is a short trip or stay-cation taken immediately following your wedding. But there are a couple of things that make it different from a traditional honeymoon. Duration being the most obvious. A mini-moon is typically a 2-5 day experience instead of a week or more. The destination is also one that is a bit closer to home. Many couples choose to take a mini-moon while they are saving up for a bigger trip in the following year. Or if they’re unable to take a long time away from work. And it’s also a great budget friendly option. Whatever the reason, it is essential that you take at least a day or two alone together before returning to your normal schedule. Because nobody should have to go back to their day job just hours after the best evening of their life.
Where to Go? What to Do?
The options are pretty endless, but we’ve compiled some of our favorite mini-moon ideas and destinations for you below!
Mini-Moon Getaway in a New City
Now, we may be partial (my cat’s name is Telluride, after all) but this luxurious mountain town is the ultimate getaway in any season. Take advantage of the gorgeous views, hiking, fishing, golfing, horseback riding, mountain biking and off-roading all summer long. And come back down to countless luxury resorts, spas and restaurants in the evenings. They are also known as a huge festival destination hosting the Bluegrass Festival, Film Festival, Yoga Festival and Balloon Festival during the summer season. And on the other side of the spectrum the skiing is some of the very best in the country in the winter. There’s really no wrong way to do Telluride, making it mini-moon gold.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Santa Fe is a desert daydream if there ever was one. Home to stunning art, architecture and hiking, you’re sure to find something you love while strolling along the adobe. Try to mini-moon in the early spring when everything is blooming and the heat isn’t crazy yet. It would take you days to see all of the different art galleries in downtown alone, so you won’t be hurting for things to do. But if you are take a day trip over to Bandelier National Monument and round out your visit with a trip to the Santa Fe Botanical Garden as well. There are so many beautiful things to see, do and eat that you may want to make your mini-moon into a longer one!
If sand and surf is what you’re after look no further than Carmel, California for your mini-moon destination! This quaint seaside town is known for its aquamarine water, fairy tale cottages and historic missions. But there’s no shortage of things to do in town when you need a break from the sun. Explore the art galleries, museums and fine dining before heading back to your B&B for some quality R&R.
Smoky Mountains, Tennessee
It’s easy to see why the Smoky Mountains are a popular mini-moon destination. Just look at that view! Rent a cabin and get back to nature with all of the lush hiking opportunities these mountains have to offer. Book a zip-lining excursion or go white water rafting to add a little zest to your relaxing mountain getaway. Or scoot on down to Dollywood for a one of a kind adventure. Whether you’re staying in Pigeon Forge or keeping it close to the National Park, a Smoky Mountain mini-moon is sure to delight.
Willamette Valley, Oregon
Move over Napa, because the Willamette Valley is a wine-country destination that rivals the old standby. Whether you’re a wine novice or a trained sommelier, you’re sure to enjoy a tasting at any number of award winning vineyards in the area. Many offer honeymoon packages with local bed and breakfasts for an all inclusive experience. And when you’re finished with the wine, consider a trip to the spa or wander around the adjacent towns for top notch antiquing.
Charleston, South Carolina
Add some southern charm to your mini-moon with a trip to Charleston. Steeped in history and full of beautiful places to eat, drink and soak up the sunshine, this coastal city is a no-brainer. Go in the late spring, from April to June, when the magnolias are in full bloom. Stroll through the historic oak lined streets and drink in the fragrance of a city that has managed to retain it’s gentility and past, while seamlessly merging with modern times.
Mini-Moon in Your Own City
If a long weekend is all you have time for then consider a romantic camping trip close to home! Pick somewhere with great views and put away your phones for a few days. Read, hike or just spend time swaying in a hammock with your love.
If the great outdoors aren’t your style, consider a luxury spa treatment instead. Get a couples massage, facials and sit in the sauna. We’re already feeling relaxed for you!
Love a good mosh pit? Look up local concert tickets or a live show at the theater and immerse yourself in an evening of music, dancing and fun.
You know all of those places that you say you want to check out but never do? Or that brewery you drive by every day on your way to work? Now is the perfect chance to play tourist in your own city. Explore neighborhoods you’ve never been to, pack a picnic in the park, and visit your local museums. You’ll be surprised by what treasures you can find when you step out of your normal routine.
No Place Like Home
And sometimes none of the above are possible. After all of the planning and parties and time off you may only have one day at home with your new partner before you have to return to work. So stay in. Order takeout. Get a whole stack of movies and board games. And whatever you do, DON’T do any chores. Cozy up in that pillow fort and refuse to come out until Monday.
Whatever your style, there is a mini-moon option that is perfect for you. So get creative with it! And remember that what you do is not as important as who you do it with. So enjoy these few days alone with your beloved and soak up all of the happiness and joy from your big day. That’s what it’s all about anyway. <3
